Face Forward

The first bursts of the season of sunshine provide just the right level of inspiration to rethink your front door, which, according to feng shui experts, is the most important part of the entire home. It allows chi, or vital energy, to flow into the home.

Balancing hard-line masculine forms and feminine curves can make all the difference at the entrance, says Miyoko Fuse, a Portland-based feng shui consultant. “If your front entry has straight lines, create an imaginary curvy line with pots in a staggered curve,” Fuse suggests.

Complete overhaul or small, satisfying tweak? The choice is yours.

CLEAN SWEEP.
Wipe down the doorframe, the door and all hardware at your entrance.

REVISE.
Entrances don’t have to match, but they should work in conversation with each other.

WARM WELCOME.
The right mat sends the perfect message to every inhabitant and guest who crosses your threshold.

COLOR CORECT.
Energize and modernize your entrance with a low-cost, high-impact paint job.

COUNT THESE IN.
Choose a typesetting you don’t see everywhere for a visual upgrade.

ROOTED IN PLACE.
Take a picture of your entrance with you to your favorite nursery to choose the perfect large-scale pottery and seasonal greenery.

MAKE IT WORK.
Invest in a boot tray or a stylish seat if this is where your family unloads.
