Bold Statements

Nothing draws the eye or adds the right level of pop like a well-tuned statement planter. “They should be elegant,” says Josh Clarke, manager of Al’s Garden Center & Home in Sherwood and designer of the planters featured here. “‘Wow’ doesn’t have to mean shock factor.

CLARKE’S METHODOLOGY

  1. Start with a container that complements the landscape or home feature you’d like to elevate, something that will draw the eye without feeling incongruous.
  2. Just as with choosing furniture for a room, choose larger plants first while considering the scale of the pot.
  3. Select unique and interesting plants to fill around the large plant and spill over the edge of the pot. Consider contrasting textures and complementary colors.
  4. Experiment with seasonal changes by switching out plants.
