2012DecJan_Homeward_PrizeJennifer Streit’s store, Prize, was inspired by her love of vintage items and by something her older sister would say. “Whenever she went somewhere, she would say that she would bring me back a prize,” says Streit. “I think of the shop as a place that sells things people can use but that are also fun and charming.”Streit, an Ashland native, opened Prize in 2005 after spending several years in the Bay Area. Prize features an ever-changing inventory, such as vintage furniture and jewelry, 19th century travel guides, Parisian chandeliers, vintage children’s clothes ($25 for a toddler dress), framed Pucci scarves ($550 each) and framed 1960’s Chanel advertising posters ($1,950 each). The vintage school supplies, which include geography and language flashcards (flashcards start at $3), are some of Streit’s favorite items. “I’m obsessed with school supplies,” she says. “I love to see customers lay them out and design patterns.” A food section stocks Bellocq teas ($32 per canister), and a candy table displays chocolates, gummy animals and caramels. For Streit, the store is an opportunity to be creative. “The store is always evolving,” she says. “I love that it can change at any minute and that I can try different things.”
