Soft Touch

When Portland fiber artist Felicia Murray thinks about home, she always envisions a space that feels like a warm hug. “Textures are the finishing touch for design,” Murray says. “Without them a home would feel cold, hard and ultimately sad.” Recently, Murray, who makes bright, engaging artworks for walls and floors, teamed up with regular collaborator Anne Williams of ADF Upholstery to turn a pair of 1970s Saarinen chairs into fluffy strawberry and lemon seats for a client. The project went viral—yes, because fruit-themed interiors are trending, but also because Murray’s tufted-fiber work has that visual pop that demands attention. “Texture doesn’t need to be overwhelming, it can be put in places where you least expect it,” Murray says. “I’d love to do a headboard for a bedroom, or an entire accent wall, anything that is hard and cold and untextured.”
