Heart of Wood repurposes wood scraps

Produced by the marketing department of Oregon Home

2013FW YS HeartOfWood4When Sharon and Bob Lewis come across wood destined for chipping or the fireplace, they often see wood destined for another purpose: to become finely crafted objects for the home, the kind of pieces passed down from generation to generation.

Put it on a pedestal

Standalone home offices increase in popularity

Produced by the marketing department of Oregon Home

2013FW YS MakeSmRoom2Ever been trapped on a crowded freeway at rush hour and wish you could have walked to work? Well, that’s exactly what happened to Mark Welker. A recruiter for a major insurance company, Welker grew weary of the nearly one-hour drive into Portland from his home in Canby.

Kenton Repair Cafe

kentonrepaircafeOK folks, it’s time to grab your broken toaster and get your repair-groove on. No broken toaster? How about a ripped hem, a non-functioning bike? Maybe a lesson on how to repair a flat tire on your bike, or a diagnosis on your broken speaker?

The joy of buckets

08.14.13 BucketA collection of buckets can save your bacon in any number of ways. Is the lowly bucket the little black dress of home décor? No, in theory, one LBD is all you need. A bucket collection is more like black shoes – you can never have too many.

Guilt by plastic

vintagelawnchairAfter a recent comment about the evils of plastic, a friend asked, Why are you anti-plastic? Good question. Have you noticed how many ways that concern for the environment can exhibit itself? Some people care primarily about energy and / or emissions; others care about the source of their food and what chemicals might be on it (and therefore in them).

Grab a ladder!

06.27.13 LadderMy dad left a huge old ladder in my garage years ago. I have no idea why; probably to annoy me (and it worked). He frequently leaves unwieldy objects that he no longer wants in my garage.

Portland’s first Repair Cafe event is a smashing success

repaircafeThe first Repair Café event is under our collective belts. And it was a blast! Huge sigh of relief. Huge. Right on, Portland! I’m not sure the Last Thursday habituées were prepared to see a sewing machine – complete with a seamstress – plus disassembled computers at the (depending on when you dropped by) hippie/ster festival (or, perhaps, debauched event) that is Alberta Street once a month in the summer.

Portland antique malls

trash2treasureAre you crafty? Not sly or sneaky, but good with your hands? The type who’s got multiple hole punchers and scissors and an inventory of spray paint? Well, if not, you can head to one of the Portland-area antique malls and buy repurposed art or furniture from an artist who is good at that sort of thing.
