Soft Skills

Instead of buying new, the owners of this mid-mod home tracked down an original angled sofa through a vintage retailer and had it reupholstered in a bold, bright chenille reminiscent of the Mad Men era. “The scale is just right for this generous living room, and it seats a lot of people,” says the project’s designer, Karen Nepacena, whose new book with Christopher Dibble, Midcentury Modern Style, features ideas for mid-mod remodels. With vintage pieces, always factor in added labor such as refinishing wood, new cushions and the cost of fabric. “It’s worth it — these pieces were really built to last,” Nepacena says.
